Photo Australia announces worldwide Open Call for artists and photographers to participate in PHOTO 2024 International Festival of Photography, Melbourne.
Following the success of PHOTO 2022 and PHOTO 2021 (originally conceived as PHOTO 2020), Photo Australia will deliver the third edition of the biennial–PHOTO 2024–in collaboration with over 50 cultural, education, industry and government partners from 1 to 24 March 2024.
Proposals are invited from emerging, mid-career and established artists and photographers in response to PHOTO 2024’s theme and will be selected by an international jury of leading photography and visual art curators from institutions including MoMA, New York; The Photographers’ Gallery, London; and the National Gallery of Victoria,Melbourne.
As the world encounters ecological, social and political uncertainty, PHOTO 2024 invites artist sand photographers to explore what lies ahead. Proposals are invited that reflect on possible and parallel futures across the thematic strands of Social Futures, Environmental Futures, Indigenous Futures and Technological Futures.
“As we face climate catastrophe, pandemics, war and revolution, PHOTO 2024 invites artists and photographers to share their visions of the future,” says Photo Australia’s Founder and Artistic Director Elias Redstone. “In these challenging times we are looking to artists to show us the world as it can be, how current events are pointing towards future scenarios and how, if we want to change the future, that change must start today.”
“This is an opportunity for artists and photographers from across Australia and around the world to make themselves known to us,” says PHOTO 2024 Curator Brendan McCleary. “We are looking to be inspired by new work that addresses the challenges society faces, whether that is global or highly personal, to allow us to hope and plan for a better world.”Successful applicants will be offered an artist fee and invited to exhibit in the award-winning biennial’s outdoor program–a trail of temporary public artworks displayed on bespoke frames, building facades, and lightboxes that transform Melbourne’s streets, laneways and parks into an open air gallery of the world’s most inspiring photography–that will be presented alongside a curated program of gallery exhibitions, events and education programs in Melbourne and regional Victoria.
PHOTO 2022 was viewed by over 160,000 people and won the Melbourne Award for Arts & Events, the City of Melbourne’s highest accolade. Visit photo.org.au to learn more about the PHOTO 2024 Open Call. Applications close on Tuesday 21 February 2023
