Dave Tacon

Dave Tacon is a photographer, director, producer and writer. He is a graduate of the University of Melbourne (Bachelor of Arts with Honours) and wrote his Honours thesis on German filmmaker Wim Wenders. Dave interned at Road Movies, Wim Wenders’ Berlin film production company, upon graduation. He recently returned to live in Melbourne after ten years based in Shanghai.

Dave is a two-time winner of a Walkley Award, a winner of a Foreign Press Association Award (UK), a Quill Award from the Melbourne Press Club, winner of a Photo District News (PDN) Storytellers Award (USA) and is a two-time finalist in Australia’s National Photographic Portrait Prize.

He has worked on assignments for such publications as Vogue, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Al Jazeera, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, The Guardian, Stern Magazine, Die Zeit, GEO (Germany), The Monthly, Good Weekend and numerous other titles. Dave has also worked with NGOs such as Australian Red Cross, Oxfam Australia, CARE Australia, Medicos del Mundo and WITNESS.

His commercial photography clients include Apple, HSBC, Siemens, Toyota, Gensler, Fendi, the Ritz-Carlton and the State Government of Victoria,

Dave’s portrait and photo-documentary work is held in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, The National Library of Australia, State Library of Victoria, the University of Melbourne and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

He is a Photojournalism lecturer for the Masters program at the Centre for Advancing Journalism at the University of Melbourne.
