‘Ladies centre and men sashay – ladies, work those skirts a little higher’

When I mention to friends I’m involved with a square dance community, first impressions are that it’s a group of pensioners barn dancing.  Yes the age group is predominately the older generation however many have been dancing for more than 40 years.

A lack of new members is leaving the community nervous on whether their clubs will survive.

I hope they do continue for many years, as we can learn a lot from this community.  Square dancing provides both mental and physical activity, as well as team building skills.

The most impressive aspect of the square dance community is the inclusiveness. Friendships abound, invitations to club nights and special event dances ensures one can dance 6 nights a week if you’ve got the stamina.

Many do; putting the younger generation to shame.
