How do the Awards define a ‘photobook’?
A photobook is a publication that focuses on photographic content presented visually.

Does a photobook need to be previously published?
No. The book can be unpublished, self published, trade published, or published via an academic or cultural institution.

Can I submit an older book?
No, your book must have been published or finalised between January 1st, 2020 and January 22nd, 2024. Books completed or published earlier than this date will not be considered for judging

What is the Pre-press category
The Pre-press category allows for photobooks which are yet to be printed to be submitted in digital form. For printed photobooks, please enter the Photobook category.

How does the Student category work?
Students are welcome to participate in both Photobook and/or Pre-press (digital dummy) categories. Student entrants will be awarded separately to the main category winners, receiving an award or commendation for best student submission.

Does the book need an ISBN?
No, an International Standard Book Number is not required.

Can the book be published overseas?
Yes, as long as the photographer is an Australian or New Zealand citizen, resident or student at the time of publishing.

What format is required for the digital book file?
A low-resolution PDF less than 200MB. Individual JPEG files will not be accepted.

How can I submit a digital file if my book was not digitally created, it was handmade?
Video or photograph each page or spread of your book and submit to us via WeTransfer. You will then receive confirmation upon download.

Is a physical copy of the book required?
For the Photobook category, you must submit a physical book. The book can be printed via any print service or process.

Can the book include images by more than one photographer?
Yes. Photobooks including work by multiple photographers are eligible but details of all photographer credits must be entered in to the Entry Form and all photographers must meet the terms and conditions.

Can the book include found or archival imagery?
Yes, as long as they meet all terms and conditions.

Is there an entry fee?
Yes, the entry fee for each category is as listed below:

  • Photobook Category – A$55
  • Pre-press Category – A$55
  • Student Entrants – A$35

Can international students enter?
Yes, if they were enrolled at an Australian or New Zealand institution during the period of making the book, and meet the terms and conditions.

Can I submit more than one book?
Yes, you can submit as many seperate entries as you like.

Will I receive feedback on my book?
Due to the number of entries we are unable to provide feedback on every entry.

Will my book be returned?
This is an acquisitive award. Books will be returned to non-finalists who include a prepaid, self-addressed envelope with their book submission. Winner and finalist books will remain in the Award archives for public access and exhibition.

When will the award announcements and exhibition take place?
The award announcement and exhibition will be held at the PHOTO 2024 International Festival of Photography Photobook Weekend in Melbourne over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of March, 2024
