SANJA JUGOVIC BURNS

Sanja Burns is a Croatian-Australian photographic artist. She currently lives and works between Woodend, Victoria and Bali, Indonesia. Sanja has spent the last ten years tracing the confines of her own identity and displacement through the lens of her camera. In 2017, she gained admission to the renowned Atelier Smedsy, non-academic programme in Paris where she studied and worked for two years, under the guidance of JH Engström and Margot Wallard, gaining invaluable experience and realising her first significant body of work.

Sanja was a shortlisted finalist for the Burn Magazine Emerging Photographer Grant (2018), a platform founded by David Alan Harvey and supported by the Magnum Foundation.

Her  first book titled ‘It Is Always Lush and Warm In the Middle of Nowhere’ was shortlisted for the Encontros da Imagem Photobook Award, EI2021 and exhibited at the International Photography Festival in Braga, Portugal. More recently Sanja’s book was also shortlisted for the Australian Photobook Awards and shown at the Photo 2022, International Festival of Photography in Melbourne.

Sanja is a researcher specialising in cultural research and sensory perception. She has spent over two decades working in the flavour and fragrance industry around the world.
